1. The Bengal Files opens with a haunting voiceover about a series of unsolved crimes that have rocked West Bengal over the past decade. Set against the backdrop of political unrest and social turmoil, the film follows Rudra Sen, an upright and fearless CBI officer who is sent to Kolkata after a whistleblower leaks classified files, exposing a network of corruption, disappearances, and secret killings known as “The Bengal Files.”
2. Rudra’s arrival triggers unease among local politicians and bureaucrats, many of whom are implicated in the leaked documents. As he begins investigating, he uncovers links between the disappearances of journalists, student activists, and social workers — all silenced for speaking against powerful figures. The deeper he digs, the more dangerous his mission becomes.
3. With the help of Ananya Mukherjee, a bold investigative journalist who lost her brother in one of the “filed” cases, Rudra begins connecting dots that lead to a secret task force created unofficially by the state government during a time of emergency. The unit was meant to counter insurgency but was later used to eliminate dissenters and political opponents.
4. The trail leads Rudra into the heart of rural Bengal, where he discovers hidden graves, fake encounters, and villagers too afraid to speak. Through flashbacks, the audience sees how state machinery was twisted for personal gain — how innocent people were labeled as “extremists” and eliminated. One name keeps popping up: DSP Gautam Roy, now a decorated officer with a clean image.
5. Rudra confronts Gautam Roy, but the officer mocks him, claiming, “In Bengal, history is written by those in power.” With no witnesses willing to testify, Rudra struggles to build a case. Meanwhile, Ananya is targeted and barely survives an attack meant to scare them off the investigation. This pushes Rudra to take a more aggressive approach.
6. He manages to get a key witness — a former constable — to confess on camera, revealing how fake encounters were staged and evidence destroyed. The confession goes viral, forcing the central government to act. Protests erupt across Bengal as people demand justice. But just as arrests are made, the whistleblower who leaked the files is found dead, hung from a tree with a fake suicide note.
7. With mounting public pressure, Rudra finally gets Gautam Roy arrested, and the court begins proceedings against several high-ranking officials. However, the film doesn’t end in a typical happy way. In a bitter twist, Roy is granted bail, and key documents go missing from court archives. The system, once again, shields its own.
8. The Bengal Files ends with Rudra and Ananya walking through a rally of protestors, surrounded by chants of justice and change. Rudra looks into the camera and says, “Files can be buried. Truth can’t.” The final scene shows more anonymous files being delivered to newsrooms and courtrooms — signaling that the battle may be far from over, but the silence has been broken.
